wwiTV May 26, 2008
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Media Streaming, Organizations , 2commentsA lot of worldwide TV channel aggregator websites coming up these days. When I was writing about the last one (TVChannelsFree), I came across wwiTV.
wwiTV does what other online channel aggregators do: collect the links of online streams for TV channels. Their content ranges from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe, and for India they offer around 21 channels. Some of the Indian streams are rare finds like Doordarshan, Lok Sabha TV, Zee TV…
I haven’t tried their service long enough to comment on the stream quality. Post a comment if you have.
Indibloggies September 4, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Faves, Non-Profit, Organizations , add a commentIndibloggies are the unofficial Indian version of the ‘bloggies‘ awards that started around 2001. The intent of rewarding and recognizing the best of blogs remains common to both.
Indibloggies started as a parody on bloggies by one guy in 2003, and grew from formal ‘jury’ in 2004 to official sponsors in 2005. Now they are a platform for showcasing the best of Indian blogs. The procedure for selection isn’t set in stone… its a mix of rating score by online voting and the interesting lineup of jurors. Anybody can submit nominations.
Like the redundancy of everything else in the internet-world, there are multiple of such ‘awards’ and organizations existing today. In case you are interested, valleywag has an interesting comparison of them here.
Proto.in February 18, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Organizations, Technology , add a commentProto.in is about Indian startups. It is the newly started event organized for startups to showcase their products and technologies. There is no final award/prize to be won (it’s not a competition, it’s a platform for display); the love and attention of media and VC’s is probably a reward in itself
…
The first Proto was held in January this year with select 27 companies, and there are already talks of another in works. From what I could gather, companies needed to pay Rs.500 and investors Rs.25,000 for participating in it. Each company had 8-10 minutes for presenting their stuff, which surprises me- all that hoopla for 10 minutes each?
Proto is probably modeled after Demo (which has been around for last 16 years in US, basically the same theme) and is definitely a great step towards formalizing Indian startups scene.
MAIT February 4, 2007

I’ve never looked into the organization-aspect of Indian IT industry before. The more I research, it appears that we have some well established groups out there. Good to know.

India Venture Capital Association January 22, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Organizations , add a commentIndia Venture Capital Association is an association of VC funds in India. It’s based in New Delhi, and claims over 40 members (including affiliates). Seems like they are well represented in governmental partnerships (SEBI, Nasscom, FICCI etc) and hold regular meetings and training courses.
They also have a US chapter in silicon valley, aimed at creating better relationships with US-based VC funds. I’ve recently subscribed to their email newsletter for keeping up with investments in India… will update this posts when I form an opinion.

Indian Association for Medical Informatics January 15, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Organizations, Technology , add a commentIAMI was started in 1993, and became the official representative body to the International Medical Informatics Association in late 2006. They have more than 500 members now (mostly physicians) and hold annual events, publish a journal among other things. It’s nice to see Indian participate in emerging interdisciplinary fields at a global scale.
TiE January 12, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Organizations , add a commentTiE stands for ‘The Indus Entrepreneurs’. It is a non-profit organization that promotes entrepreneurship and mentoring for asian (read Indian) professionals. Although they started with the ‘Indus’ connection, it’s not restricted to South-east asians (they also re-invented their acronym to ‘Talent, Ideas and Enterprise’). The organization is largely made of Indians scattered across US, India and couple asian countries. The membership boasts of over 10,000 folks with chapters across major US and Indian cities.
The website isn’t anything great: the look-and-feel is a bit loosely done. Looks like they hold periodic events and gatherings in selected cities. I’m intrigued - just emailed them asking about membership dues (oddly enough, they were nowhere to be found on the website - except for a incorrect reference in the membership section which points to the chapter link for details!). I’ll update this post when I hear back from them.
Update:Okay, the ‘membership@..’ address bounced back, but I got a response from ‘admin@’. The membership costs 100$ for the first year and then 50$ annual after that. Here is a link to a more functional site for TiE. Also a silicon valley version.
50$.. don’t know if it’s worth that amount. If you’ve had experience with TiE, lemme know.
Another Update: I joined TiE. They have an upcoming event in end of Feburary. Will post about it again.
