Digg copycats: Indian news ranking sites October 16, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : News , add a commentHere is another list-it-in-one-post-cuz-there-are-too-many-out-there type review. Just like the Youtube copycats post that is an ongoing list of all Indian video sharing half-baked startups, this post is about collecting Digg copycats.
I feel like one of the weirdos who like to collect AOL mail CD’s, but must admit that its fun to see this list grow. Its yet another proof of the rising, rash entrepreneurship spirit in Indian online market today. Lots of money floating around, no time to sit and think, just copy the next western web 2.0 concept and roll out a desi version. ‘Copycats’ focused posts like these are going to be a trend at eIndia, I can foresee that.
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Indians are continuing to give compliments to Kevin Rose, thanks to open-source software like pligg. So here is the list of Indian websites that have been shaped after Digg, with almost mind-numbing similarity:
- Xoomly
- Rambhai
- BestofIndya
- IndianPad
- Newscola
- PutVote
- Ekjut
- Jigg.in
- Desipitara
- IndianBytes
- My22Yards (Neat.. focuses on cricket)
- Readster.in
- Humsurfer
- GyanIn
- Kify India Stocks (focused on Indian stock related news)
- HotSamachar
- MinkIt (creatively named as DiggIndiaNews when it started)
- DolBajao
- IndiaRooster
- NewsMirchi (almost defunct)
Needless to say, I’ve spent zero time browsing each site in detail. So if you are a founder/fan of any of the sites above and think that there is a brilliant business model that differentiates it from Digg, let me know. Additions to the list are welcome, as always.
Mutiny.in September 4, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Faves, News , add a commentThe Great Indian Mutiny blog is a collection of thoughts and opinions of a group of independent writers and bloggers. They discuss news, experiences and ideas in an open and candid way, and that’s what sets them apart.
Mutiny.in was started by Jacob Joseph in mid-2004 and has since shown remarkable consistency in keeping a well-coordinated, entertaining and thought-provoking stream of blogposts.
IndiaeNews June 9, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : News , 1 comment so farI stumbled onto the IndiaeNews website while surfing. It’s a Indian news aggregator, mostly. But the layout is much more…er.. disciplined than other news websites that aren’t owned by major newspapers. So I thought I’ll give them a mention. I get my news in email via google alerts, so I haven’t been using this site at all, personally.
I’m still trying to find a webpage that has a comprehensive list of all online Indian news sites… Let me know if anyone knows a good one.
LiveMint February 11, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : News , 2commentsLiveMint is the recently launched online version of “Mint”- an Indian business newspaper by Hindustan Times Media company. The paper is published with an exclusive agreement with Wall Street Journal to publish WSJ branded news and information in India.
The site is moderately usable, and looks focused on business news (which is a bit of surprise, knowing that all Indian media portals tend to drift away from their main domain in an effort to gather more eyeballs).
IndiaPRwire February 4, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : News , 2commentsAllright, I admit that I’m new to the concept of Press Release Distribution. IndiaPRwire service lets individuals/businesses submit their latest happenings for free, and they get posted online once they are reviewed by the site editors. It’s like maintaining your own press room online.
IndiaPRwire started back in July 2006, and has plenty content for a relatively young site. It seems to be backed by the right people and contacts. They have the site categorized into industries, and that tempted me to signup for their e-newsletter, but the fact that they can’t filter out specific industry made me back out. Although their RSS functionality seems to be specific, I’m not sure if I can take all that news coming my way. My Google Reader is already overloaded.
Anyway, it’s a good site to keep an eye out for official Indian press releases.
Express Healthcare January 15, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Healthcare, News , add a commentExpress Healthcare is an online and print magazine about Indian healthcare business. The print edition started January 2000 and comes out every fortnight. The online version archive goes back to December 2000 and the site is pretty usable, if not slick.
The mag is owned by Indian Express Newspapers group.
GigaOM-India, Inc. January 11, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : Blogs, News, Technology , add a commentI first read Om Malik’s work in the print magazine Business 2.0. He is a veteran IT guy. He runs his own online publishing network called ‘GigaOm’ (go figure). Anyways, the India section is pretty useful - they have unique posts and helpful insights into the indian technology market. Definately worth subscribing to.
Major Newspapers January 6, 2007
Posted by Pallav Sharda in : News , add a commentThere are just too many major newspaper sites, so I’m going to collate all of them in here, maybe we a line or two of overall comment about each. If anyone knows of a website that aggregates the Indian news sites, let me know.
- NavBharat Times
- Telegraph India (Published from Calcutta. Beware of pop-ups!)
- Indian Express (Multiple Publications- check them out here. Annoying popups on the main site)
- Times of India
