DesiVesi February 4, 2007

What can you write about a site when it’s ‘About’ page has nothing but the phrase ‘Dummy Text’ repeated multiple times.

DesiVesi is a portal for NRI’s. It’s look-and-feel is a bit cheesy with sardarji cartoons everywhere. Content is pretty low, judging by my acid-test: click on ‘Classifieds’, choose california state and hit search. No match.

My theory is that if you can’t get anyone from California to post in your ‘Classifieds’ section, you haven’t reached the minimum threshold for content viability. By the way, none of the other states pulled up any classifieds either.

Other than classifieds, there are some scanty movie reviews, odd recipes and mysterious matrimonial ads.

It is quite easy to sit on the side and comment, it takes blood to stand in the battlefield with courage and fight. Before you write one more thing about this new site please revisit and start realizing the future potential of this website, which has seven different portals in one. As a matter of fact now you can pull up pretty much all the states and you will find data in there.

Dear ADMIN, Thanks for the comment. You are right, it is indeed easy to comment on the sidelines. Kudos to you (assuming you are the admin for DesiVesi) for ‘fighting the battle’.
However, the very medium that gives you the potential to put DesiVesi out (i.e. the net) gives me the right to voice my opinion. Thanks to your invite, I explored DesiVesi again, and found that my noscript add-on in FireFox was blocking the few for-sale adds that were there. I regret that my style of writing irked you, but I maintain my view that the content at DesiVesi is minimal. Some of the ads looked like spam- For e.g. you may want to check the ‘12dzone.com’ ad in electronics. I tried to search for classifieds in India, but it kept defaulting back to USA. Tried New Zealand and it showed up results with USA contact address.
Anyway, I’m glad you gave me a reason to look at DesiVesi again. Please feel free to write more about your site- it’s history, funding, future plans etc. I’m also curious to know what you meant by “seven different portals into one”. I’ll be happy to write a follow-up/edited post for DesiVesi.
Keep up the good work,
eIndia

Seven different portals in one simply means that it is a combination of 7 different sites by itself. For example Shaadi.com, Craigslist.com and smashhits.com are some of the most popular sites for one subject each. Shaadi.com is purely Matrimonial Site and Craigslist.com is purely classifieds site. We are offering almost the same features with no cost to consumer and we have 7 of these different subjects under one roof. It is like Swan Motors selling Maruti only or next door Modern Motors selling Maruti, Toyota and Honda as well. Not to mention that Modern Motors will need three or more types of setup (service stations, engineers and parts) to run the show. Of course initially it takes a lot to build it, but imagine where Modern motors will be after 5 years IF THEY DID EVERYTHING RIGHT.

Personaly I have nothing against you. It is just the critic attitude. People like me who gather some courage to get into some kind of business need some appriciation and positive comments than a negative unjustified comments. If you look around how many people from todays youth is chasing their dream of becoming something by themselves. All are preparing for jobs only. Somone got to do something and some positive comments from people like yourself (who leave some impact) will encourage and eventually inspire others to get out of this job rut.

Last thing people throw stones on the tree which has some fruit on it. I am taking this site to become the number one website for Indian Community for all the services we offer and we will offer in near future. It will temain a cost free site for consumer. I am focused on road than wipers.

“The question is not how big you can dream, the question is how long you can dream big.”

Enjoy your day.

Dear Admin,
Thanks for the insight. I do applaud your effort at desivesi. If your site is not ready for prime-time (in terms of content, user-base, functionality, etc) consider putting a “beta” in the banner/logo. That helps wandering critics (like me) to go easy and look at the site from an new-comer perspective.
